What we have seen is this: delivery-option projects fail in the handoff between a good checkout and the warehouse. A customer carefully selects a nearby locker, but the order reaches fulfilment with only a generic shipping label or an address that the carrier cannot interpret. The storefront did its job; the delivery system lost the promise.
Parcel lockers and carrier pickup points can make delivery more convenient for UK shoppers who are not at home during the day. Shopify’s current delivery guidance recognises pickup points in the UK, while carrier apps can add network-specific selection. The implementation still needs to connect checkout, order data, labelling, tracking and support.

| Why StoreBuilt can win | The problem spans checkout customisation, order data and carrier operations |
Search results expose carrier apps and general shipping instructions. The content gap is the end-to-end delivery contract a UK brand needs before launch. This guide links naturally to StoreBuilt’s Shopify integration service rather than targeting the homepage’s agency terms.
Choose the correct delivery model
Do not group every collection option under “click and collect.” The ownership and failure paths differ.
| Method | Collection location owner | Operational requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Store pickup | Merchant | Store stock, preparation and collection confirmation |
| Carrier pickup point | Third-party shop | Carrier service code and point identifier |
| Parcel locker | Carrier network | Locker eligibility, dimensions and digital access notice |
| Local delivery | Merchant or local fleet | Postcode zone, route and delivery slot |
| Home delivery | Carrier | Valid address and chosen service level |
Start with the carrier contract and supported Shopify path. Shopify Help currently notes that pickup-point functionality varies by country, plan and integration route. A carrier app may offer a checkout map but require another connection for label creation. Confirm what the subscription includes before promising a complete integration.
Define eligibility by destination, parcel dimensions, weight, hazardous status, age restriction and service availability. A locker option should disappear when the basket cannot use it; leaving it visible and rejecting the order later creates avoidable support work.
Preserve the pickup-point identity
A pickup point is not merely an address. It has a network and stable identifier used by the carrier. Save both the human-readable location and the machine-readable code. Decide where that data lives on the order and how every downstream system reads it.
Trace a test order across these steps:
- customer selects a network and point;
- checkout displays and confirms the choice;
- Shopify order stores the identifier;
- OMS or warehouse imports the service and point;
- label request sends the correct carrier data;
- carrier accepts and tracks the parcel;
- customer receives collection instructions.
An anonymous StoreBuilt-style integration review found a delivery choice displayed correctly in checkout while the export sent only a formatted street address. The warehouse could print a label, but the shipment was no longer attached to the intended pickup network. Making the service code and point ID explicit in the data contract removed the ambiguity before any interface redesign.
Avoid placing essential data only in an order note that staff must copy. Notes are useful for visibility, not as the sole integration mechanism. If an order-edit process changes shipping, confirm whether the pickup identifier remains valid or must be reselected.
Design checkout for confidence
Present home delivery and pickup clearly, then allow the shopper to search by postcode or current location. The map should be paired with a usable list, keyboard controls and text labels. Show distance, opening hours and any collection constraints without relying on map pins alone.
Repeat the selected point before payment. A generic line such as “standard shipping” beside a locker selection damages confidence. Test the route on mobile, slow connections, address autocomplete and accelerated checkout. Verify what happens when a customer returns from payment or edits the basket.
Price the option deliberately. A low-cost locker service may improve delivery economics, but the checkout label should remain understandable. Avoid exposing internal carrier product codes. If free delivery thresholds apply, state whether lockers and home delivery qualify in the same way.
Connect the warehouse and carrier
Warehouse teams need a distinct, scannable service. Validate label format, cut-off times, parcel restrictions, manifesting, tracking events and claims. If labels are generated outside Shopify, prove that the pickup-point fields survive the export and are recognised by that platform.
Design exception handling for a full or unavailable locker, carrier outage, invalid dimensions, rejected label and missed collection. The brand should never silently redirect a parcel to a distant point. Decide who contacts the customer, how reselection works and when home delivery becomes an acceptable alternative.
Customer communication must cover dispatch, arrival at the point, collection method, deadline and consequence of non-collection. Keep carrier and Shopify notifications coordinated so messages do not contradict each other.
This is a practical area for StoreBuilt’s Shopify support, maintenance and audits: the work is less about installing an app and more about validating every system that touches the delivery promise.
Contact StoreBuilt if locker orders are losing data between checkout and fulfilment.
Pilot with operational metrics
Pilot one carrier, one fulfilment location and a controlled product set. Place orders near the size and weight boundaries, test Shop Pay and standard checkout, create labels, collect real parcels and simulate an unavailable point.
Track locker selection rate, checkout completion, cost per shipment, first-attempt success, non-collection, support contacts and delivery-time variance. Compare with home delivery by postcode and basket profile. A high selection rate is not a win if label exceptions or customer contacts also rise.
Create a launch checklist with owners for carrier configuration, checkout, warehouse mapping, notifications, support scripts and reporting. Preserve screenshots and sample payloads so later changes can be regression-tested.
StoreBuilt point of view
StoreBuilt believes parcel lockers should be implemented as a delivery data product, not a checkout widget. The map attracts attention, but the durable value comes from a pickup-point identity that reaches the carrier intact and an exception process customers can trust.
